Moving Past the Shallows

There is a distinct difference between surviving a wilderness and truly stepping back into the Garden. When you spend years wandering through seasons of grief, family warfare, or professional exile, your heart naturally defaults to a state of self-protection. You learn to live on the bare minimum–thankful for the quiet moments where the waves simply smooth out the rough sand of your day. You learn to be content with just enough.
But the final destination of your Return isn’t quiet, or a static compromise. God did not pull you out of the desert just to leave you sitting on a barren shoreline. He is bringing you back to a Garden flowing with living water.
The Landscape of the Throne
In the final chapters of Revelation, the grand chiasm of scripture closes not with an ocean, but with a river. John describes a “a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God” (Revelation 22:1).
When we look at a magnificent, rushing waterfall cascading down an ancient stone cliff–like this breathtaking view of Yosemite Falls–our souls instantly recognize what it is. It is the physical architecture of an unstoppable, overflowing grace. The God of Love does not measure out His restoration with a medicine dropper. He doesn’t give you just enough to get by.
When the shell finally breaks, the doves are released, and the grand circle back to the Garden is complete, we are not met with the silent, dry boundaries of religion. We are swept into the rushing, vibrant, thunderous reality of a New Creation that has been flowing for 2026 years.
Leaving the Desert Behind
Think about what it means to rest in the finished work of Jesus. If “It is finished” (John 19:30), then the blockage that cut mankind off from the source of life has been completely obliterated. The dam has burst. You don’t have to live in the dry, depressing fear of a modern gospel that focuses only on punishment and wrath. That is the desert talking.
The structural reality of your Creator is found in the overflow. He is the Potter who shapes, the Pursuer who chases you for 43 years, and ultimately, the Waterfall that washes away the dust of your wilderness.
An Invitation Along the Shore:
If you have been living in the shallows of fear, wrapped in safeguards and trying to police your own heart, look up at the mountain. The journey you are on is taking you somewhere magnificent. Let go of the dry land. Step into the rushing river of His presence, and let the living waters of the Return carry you completely home.
