To my firstborn son Christopher

You came to me in human form from one small microscopic fertilized seed, growing mysteriously inside me, touching my heart and soul with your first kick. In my humanness I thought our labor together was all over when I saw your dead, lifeless body coming out of my body. Weeping uncontrollably as the nurses baptized you and gave you the name Christopher Robert, the very heart of my soul stopped living. When they placed you in my arms, your physical being was so warm, and the sight of your lifeless body forever etched into my mind, I gave up, I closed my heart and built a wall of protection so strong that no one, not anything, not even you would ever hurt me again. I gave up, turned my back and heart on you because all I knew was that you had abandoned me.

When I gave up on you, you never, ever, once gave up on me. Instead you coached me for the next 33 years as I continued in labor of the hardest pain ever that came to me in waves of intensity, so intense that at times I thought I could never take one more pain of this. The labor of birth is over; the pain is washing away to joy as I hold your precious new life in my hands. Though I am once again weeping uncontrollably; my tears are for the joy, for the hope and for the love you have given me from your life.
